What Is the 7th House in a Birth Chart?

The 7th house in a birth chart is the house of relationships and partnerships. It covers marriage, long-term commitment, business partners and anyone who sits across the table from you. It begins directly opposite the rising sign, at the point that was setting on the western horizon when you were born.

If the 1st house is "me," the 7th is "you." Together the two form an axis. One describes how you put yourself forward, the other how you come together with the person in front of you.

Why is the 7th house on the opposite side of the chart?

The ascendant is the point rising on the eastern horizon at your birth. Exactly opposite, 180 degrees away, is the point setting in the west. That's the descendant, and on Zodivia it appears in the positions table as "Descendant." In systems like Placidus or Koch the 7th house starts at exactly that degree. In Whole Sign houses, the 7th house is the whole of the sign opposite your rising sign.

Opposite signs come in fixed pairs: Aries and Libra, Taurus and Scorpio, Gemini and Sagittarius, Cancer and Capricorn, Leo and Aquarius, Virgo and Pisces. With Aries rising, your 7th house is Libra.

What does the 7th house traditionally describe?

In classical astrology the 7th house covered marriage, partners and contracts. It also covered something that surprises people now: open enemies. That means someone who opposes you to your face. The other side in a lawsuit, the person across from you in a negotiation, your opponent in a contest. What they share is that they stand facing you. That's why the 7th house describes every one-to-one relationship, not just romance.

Love doesn't sit in a single house of the chart. Tradition gives flirting, fun and romance to the 5th house, and commitment and partnership to the 7th. Fancying someone and building a life with them are different things, and the chart reads them in different houses.

What does the sign on the 7th house say?

In modern readings, the sign on the 7th house is read as the qualities you look for in a relationship, or notice in the other person. A common observation is that these qualities complement your rising sign. Someone with Aries rising makes decisions quickly and alone. Libra on their 7th house is read as a search for balance, compromise and tact in relationships.

That doesn't mean "you'll marry a Libra." The sign on the house doesn't show your partner's sun sign. It describes a theme that comes up in relationships.

Planets in the 7th house

In a traditional reading, a planet in the 7th house brings its theme to what you experience in relationships or what you're drawn to:

Each of these shifts with the planet's sign and aspects. If Saturn is in the 7th but trine Venus, that seriousness can just as well be read as a warm kind of loyalty.

My 7th house is empty. Does that mean I won't marry?

People ask this a lot, and the answer is clear: an empty 7th house doesn't mean no relationships. With ten planets spread across twelve houses, every chart has at least two empty ones. Plenty of happily married people have an empty 7th house.

For an empty house you look at the ruler of its sign. If your 7th house is in Capricorn, its ruler is Saturn. The sign and house Saturn sits in are read as where the story of your 7th house plays out.

Can a chart tell you when you'll get married?

Some astrological traditions use techniques for timing marriage. They haven't been shown to work scientifically. Don't leave decisions like starting, staying in or ending a relationship to a chart. The same goes for someone else's chart: judging a person or a relationship by their chart alone isn't fair to them.

If you don't know your birth time

The 7th house begins opposite the ascendant, so it can't be worked out without a birth time. Zodivia doesn't calculate the ascendant, the descendant or the houses for charts without a time.

Look at your own 7th house

Draw your birth chart and find the sign on your 7th house, any planets in it, or, if it's empty, where its ruler sits. If you'd like to see two charts side by side, chart compatibility shows the aspects between two people's planets. It deliberately doesn't give a compatibility score, because there's no accepted way to calculate one.

Then ask yourself: what do I need most in close relationships, and does it resemble what I read in my 7th house?
