What Is the 1st House in a Birth Chart?

The 1st house in a birth chart is the house about you: your body, your temperament and the way you approach life. It starts from the sign rising on the eastern horizon when you were born, which makes the first house of the chart the house of your rising sign.

The other eleven houses describe particular areas of life: money, relationships, work, family. The 1st house describes the person walking into all of them. Tradition links it with first impressions, appearance, physical vitality and the way you take on something new.

Where exactly does the 1st house begin?

That depends on the house system. In Whole Sign houses, your entire rising sign is the 1st house. If you have Virgo rising, everything from 0 to 30 degrees of Virgo falls in your 1st house. In systems like Placidus or Koch, the 1st house starts at the exact degree of your rising sign.

An example makes the difference clear. Say your rising sign is at 25° Virgo and your Mercury is at 10° Virgo. In Whole Sign, Mercury is in the 1st house, because it's in the same sign as the ascendant. In Placidus, the 1st house only begins at 25° Virgo, so Mercury drops back into the 12th. When the same planet shows up in different houses on two sites, this is usually why. Zodivia uses Whole Sign by default, and you can pick another system under "Advanced settings."

What does the 1st house traditionally describe?

In ancient Greek astrology the rising point was called the horoskopos, the "hour-marker." That's where the word horoscope comes from. Because the whole chart was built out from this point, the 1st house stood for the person themselves: their body, health, character and the general course of their life.

Modern astrology keeps that frame and puts it in more psychological terms. The 1st house is read as the manner you slip into without thinking when you walk into a new setting. Picture the moment you first step into a crowded room. Tradition connects that moment to the 1st house.

The 1st house is one of the four angular houses, along with the 4th, 7th and 10th. Tradition treats planets in the angular houses as more visible and more prominent. A planet in the 1st house, especially one within a few degrees of the ascendant, is read as one of the chart's standout themes.

How are planets in the 1st house read?

In a traditional reading, a planet in the 1st house colours your manner and the first impression you make. A few examples:

These are starting points. The planet's sign and aspects change the reading. If Saturn is in the 1st house but trine Jupiter, a more hopeful tone can be read behind that serious front.

My 1st house is empty. What does that mean?

It doesn't mean anything is missing. With ten planets spread over twelve houses, every chart has at least two empty ones. An empty 1st house doesn't suggest a faint personality. It means the story of that house is carried somewhere else.

That somewhere is the ruling planet of your rising sign, also called the chart ruler. With Sagittarius rising, your chart ruler is Jupiter. Jupiter's sign and house are read as the area of life where the manner described by the 1st house tends to flow. The traditional rulers pair up like this: Mars for Aries and Scorpio, Venus for Taurus and Libra, Mercury for Gemini and Virgo, the Moon for Cancer, the Sun for Leo, Jupiter for Sagittarius and Pisces, Saturn for Capricorn and Aquarius. Modern astrology also gives Pluto to Scorpio, Uranus to Aquarius and Neptune to Pisces.

The 1st house and health

Because tradition ties the 1st house to the body, some sources draw health readings from it. A chart isn't a medical document. If something's going on with your body, ask a doctor, not your chart.

If you don't know your birth time

The 1st house depends entirely on the rising sign, so it can't be worked out without a birth time. The rising sign changes on average every two hours. Zodivia doesn't calculate the rising sign or the houses for charts without a time, because the result would be nothing more than a guess.

Look at your own 1st house

Draw your birth chart and look at three things: your rising sign, any planets in the 1st house, and where your chart ruler sits. Then ask yourself: how do people describe me when they've just met me, and which of those three does that description sound most like?
