The 2nd house in a birth chart is the house of money, possessions and resources. Tradition links it with how you make a living, and modern astrology adds what you value and how you value yourself.
If the 1st house describes the person, the 2nd describes what that person has to hand. The cash in your pocket, the salary you earn, the things you collect, and also any resource you can draw on, like your skills or your time.
What does the 2nd house traditionally describe?
Classical astrology read the 2nd house as the house of livelihood: a person's wealth, income and movable goods. Land and buildings belonged to the 4th house instead. That split is still used today.
Modern astrology added a psychological layer. The 2nd house is also read as what you count as "mine" and what makes you feel secure. For one person security is savings in the bank, for another a trade they can always fall back on, for another a handful of things they love. Tradition ties those differences to the sign on the 2nd house and the planets inside it.
The 2nd is one of the succedent houses, the ones that follow straight after the angular houses. The others are the 5th, 8th and 11th. Tradition sees succedent houses as the place where what began in the angular house is kept going and built up. If the 1st house is "me," the 2nd is "mine."
The sign on the 2nd house and its ruler
The sign on your 2nd house is read as the tone of your relationship with resources. In Whole Sign houses, the 2nd house is simply the sign after your rising sign. With Leo rising, your 2nd house is Virgo.
The ruler of that sign matters as much as the sign itself. Virgo is ruled by Mercury. If Mercury is in your 10th house, a traditional reading ties earnings to your working life and career. If it's in the 3rd, to talking, writing, teaching and other communication work. That way even an empty 2nd house has a story to tell.
Planets in the 2nd house
In a traditional reading, a planet in the 2nd house brings its own theme to how you deal with money and belongings:
- Venus in the 2nd: a wish to spend on beautiful things, comfort and good taste.
- Jupiter in the 2nd: optimism and generosity with resources, sometimes a little too relaxed.
- Saturn in the 2nd: saving, caution, security built slowly and through effort.
- Mars in the 2nd: going out to earn, money that comes fast and goes fast.
- Moon in the 2nd: an emotional bond with money, saving in order to feel safe.
Nobody gets rich because Jupiter is in their 2nd house, and nobody stays poor because Saturn is. These are readings built on symbols. The planet's sign, its aspects and the rest of the chart change each one.
The 2nd house and the 8th house
Directly opposite the 2nd house sits the 8th, and the two form an axis. The 2nd house describes what you earn and what belongs to you. The 8th describes resources you share with others: joint accounts, debts, inheritance, a partner's income. If a chart has an empty 2nd house but a busy 8th, a traditional reading suggests the person deals with money matters mostly alongside other people.
What a chart can't tell you about money
The 2nd house gives you a frame for thinking about your relationship with money. It won't tell you how much you'll earn, whether an investment will pay off or which job to take. Astrology hasn't been shown scientifically to predict events like these. If you have a financial decision to make, talk to a financial adviser and go by the numbers, not the chart.
If you don't know your birth time
Houses are laid out from the rising sign, so the 2nd house can't be worked out without a birth time either. Zodivia doesn't calculate houses for charts without a time. You'll still see the sign of Venus or Jupiter, but not the house it falls in.
Look at your own 2nd house
Draw your birth chart and find the sign on your 2nd house and any planets in it. If it's empty, look at which house that sign's ruler sits in. Then ask yourself: what do I need in order to feel financially secure?
