What Is the 10th House in a Birth Chart?

The 10th house in a birth chart is the house of career, reputation and your place in public life. Tradition connects it with the work you do, what you're known for and the role other people see you in.

On the chart wheel, the 10th house sits near the top. It's the part of the sky that was highest overhead when you were born. Tradition carries that visibility over into life: the 10th house is the side of your life that everyone can see.

"Career" is a narrow word

The 10th house is often summed up as the "work house," but it covers more than a paid job. A retired teacher whom the whole neighbourhood still calls "teacher," a parent who runs the family, a volunteer who's the known face of a local charity: all of this belongs to the 10th house. What they share is that someone looking from outside knows you by that role.

The chart spreads work across three houses. The 2nd describes the money you earn, the 6th your daily work routine and conditions, and the 10th your role in the world and your name. Two people in the same job might be doing it for the salary in one case and for the standing in the other. Tradition reads that difference by looking at which house is emphasised.

Are the 10th house and the MC the same thing?

Close, but not the same. The MC is the point where the ecliptic, the Sun's yearly path, reached its highest point in the sky at the moment you were born. It's a single degree. The 10th house is a section of the chart.

In systems like Placidus or Koch, the 10th house begins at exactly the MC's degree, so the two coincide. In Whole Sign houses, the 10th house is the tenth sign counted from your rising sign, and the MC may not be inside it. It usually falls in the 9th, 10th or 11th house. With Aquarius rising, for example, your Whole Sign 10th house is Scorpio, but your MC could be in Sagittarius, in the 11th. Zodivia uses Whole Sign by default and shows the MC separately as "Midheaven (MC)." Reading the two together gives you the fuller picture.

What does the sign on the 10th house say?

The sign on your 10th house is read as the tone of the public role that comes naturally to you. A 10th house in Leo is linked with being seen and stepping forward, one in Virgo with doing the job carefully and well, one in Pisces with helping others or working from the imagination.

You also look at the ruler of that sign. If your 10th house is in Libra, its ruler is Venus. The house Venus occupies is read as the part of life your career theme gets tangled up with: communication if Venus is in the 3rd, creativity if it's in the 5th.

Planets in the 10th house

The 10th is an angular house. Tradition sees planets in angular houses as more visible, and those in the 10th as the most public of all. A few examples:

These are symbolic readings. The planet's sign and aspects change each one.

My 10th house is empty. Does that mean no career?

It doesn't. With ten planets spread across twelve houses, every chart has at least two empty ones. An empty 10th house means its story is carried somewhere else, by the ruler of the sign on that house.

Can a chart choose your profession?

No. The 10th house gives you a frame for thinking about the kind of role you might feel at home in. It won't tell you which profession to choose, whether you'll get a promotion or when to change jobs. Astrology hasn't been shown scientifically to predict outcomes like these. If you're facing a career decision, a careers adviser or someone who works in that field will be more use to you.

The 10th house and the 4th house

Directly opposite the 10th house is the 4th: home, family and roots. Together they form an axis. One describes your life out in the world, the other your life once you've shut the front door. The question of balancing work and home is read along this axis.

If you don't know your birth time

The 10th house and the MC depend on your birth time. Zodivia doesn't calculate the MC or the houses for charts without a time.

Look at your own 10th house

Draw your birth chart. Look at the sign on your 10th house, any planets in it and the sign your MC is in. Then ask yourself: what role do people know me by, and is it the role I want?
