What Does the Moon Mean in a Birth Chart?

In a birth chart, the Moon stands for your feelings, needs and habits. If the Sun describes who you want to become, the Moon describes what you need in order to feel safe.

Almost everyone knows their sun sign. The Moon sign gets talked about less, yet plenty of people recognise themselves there first. If you feel nothing like the usual description of your sign, your Moon is a good place to look.

The Moon is the fastest point in the chart

The Moon goes once around Earth in about 27.3 days, passing through all twelve signs along the way. It moves about 13 degrees a day on average and stays in each sign for around two and a half days. The Sun, by comparison, spends about a month in each sign. So while people born in the same month usually share a sun sign, two people born in the same week can have different Moon signs.

That speed makes your birth time matter for the Moon too. If you were born on a day when the Moon changed sign, someone born that morning and someone born that evening can have different Moon signs. When the time is unknown, Zodivia works from 12:00 noon local time. If the Moon was close to the edge of a sign that day, treat the Moon sign in a chart without a time with some caution.

What does the Moon traditionally represent?

In astrological tradition the Moon is linked to your inner world: feelings, moods, the need for security, habits and the body's rhythms. It also carries the theme of giving and receiving care, which is why it's associated with childhood and with your mother or whoever raised you.

If you think of the Sun as the direction you consciously choose, the Moon is what you do without thinking. What do you do when you get home after an exhausting day? Tradition connects that moment to the Moon. The Moon rules the sign of Cancer.

What does your Moon sign describe?

The sign the Moon is in is read as the tone of how you experience feelings and what helps you settle:

These are traditional readings, not fixed definitions. Two people with the same Moon sign can be nothing alike, because the Moon's house and aspects change the picture.

The Moon's house and aspects

The house the Moon sits in is read as the area of life where your emotional needs come to the fore. A Moon in the 4th house is linked with home and family, one in the 10th with your public role, one in the 7th with close relationships.

The aspects describe how the Moon talks to the rest of the chart. A trine between the Moon and Venus is read as an ease in expressing feelings through affection. A square between the Moon and Saturn is read as reserve about showing feelings, or a theme of taking on responsibility early. A challenging aspect doesn't mean an emotional problem. Tradition sees it as a theme you work with.

The Moon on the night you were born

The angle between the Sun and the Moon in your chart shows the Moon's phase at the moment you were born. If they're in the same sign and close together, you were born around a new moon. If they're directly opposite, around a full moon. Some astrologers read the birth Moon phase as a separate layer. The phase itself is measurable; the meaning attached to it belongs to tradition.

The Moon and mental health

Because the Moon is tied to feelings, some readings draw conclusions about mood from it. A chart can be a frame for thinking about your feelings, but it's no substitute for a professional. If you've been feeling low for a long time, talking to a mental-health professional will help you far more than looking at your chart.

Astrology hasn't been shown scientifically to predict personality. The Moon's position is an exact calculation. The meanings given to Moon signs come from a symbolic tradition.

Look at your own Moon

Draw your birth chart and look at which sign your Moon is in among the Big Three, then which house it sits in. If you're curious about the Moon's phase in the sky today, have a look at the moon calendar.

Once you've read your Moon sign, ask yourself: after a bad day, what helps me most, and does it resemble what I just read?
