The 11th house in a birth chart is the house of friends, communities and hopes. Tradition ties friends, supporters, the groups you belong to and your dreams for the future to this house.
If the 7th house describes one-to-one relationships, the 11th describes how you find your place in a crowd: your circle of friends, a team, a club, a community. The answer to "where do you want to be in five years?" lives in this house too.
What does the 11th house traditionally describe?
Ancient Greek astrology called the 11th house the "Good Spirit" and saw it as the house where Jupiter rejoiced. Friends, patrons, good wishes and hopes belonged to it. Classical sources describe the 11th, along with the 5th, as one of the most favourable houses in the chart.
Tradition gave the 11th house one more subject: income from your career. The logic is simple. If the 10th house is your career, the house after it, the 11th, is that career's "2nd house," its resources. That's why classical sources also link the 11th with rewards and earnings that come from work.
The 11th is one of the succedent houses, along with the 2nd, 5th and 8th. Modern readings treat it as community, shared causes and social networks. Volunteering with a group, being part of an online community and working alongside people heading for the same goal are all linked with this house.
The sign on the 11th house and its ruler
In Whole Sign houses, the 11th house is the eleventh sign counted from your rising sign. With Cancer rising, your 11th house is Taurus. An 11th house in Taurus is linked with fewer friendships that last for years, and looking for loyalty and steadiness in friendship.
Taurus is ruled by Venus. The house Venus sits in is read as where the theme of friendship and community flows. With Venus in the 7th, that might be read as a friendship turning into a relationship over time; in the 10th, as your work circle doubling as your circle of friends.
In Whole Sign houses, the MC sometimes falls in the 11th house. In charts like that, career and community themes are read together: leading a team, or working in a job that serves a community.
Planets in the 11th house
In a traditional reading, a planet in the 11th house brings its theme to your friendships and your hopes for the future:
- Sun in the 11th: defining yourself within a community, standing out in a group.
- Moon in the 11th: treating friends like family, getting emotional support from friends.
- Venus in the 11th: being sociable and well liked, friendship turning into romance.
- Jupiter in the 11th: a wide circle, supporters, big and hopeful goals.
- Saturn in the 11th: a few trusted friends, being the one who takes responsibility in a group.
Nobody ends up friendless because Saturn is in their 11th house. Tradition reads it as someone who takes friendship seriously and builds a solid circle over the years.
If the 11th house is empty
With ten planets spread across twelve houses, every chart has at least two empty ones. An empty 11th house doesn't mean you have no friends or that your hopes won't come true. The ruler of the sign on that house carries its story.
The 11th house and the 5th house
Opposite the 11th house is the 5th: personal pleasure, creativity and romance. Together they form an axis. The 5th describes expressing yourself on your own; the 11th describes goals shared with others. Working on your own hobby is 5th house; starting a club around it is 11th house.
If you don't know your birth time
The 11th house is laid out from the rising sign, so it can't be worked out without a birth time. Zodivia doesn't calculate houses for charts without a time, and uses Whole Sign by default. Planetary positions are an exact calculation; the meanings given to the houses come from a symbolic tradition. Astrology hasn't been shown scientifically to predict personality or future events.
Look at your own 11th house
Draw your birth chart and find the sign on your 11th house, any planets in it, or, if it's empty, where its ruler sits. Then ask yourself: among which people do I most feel part of an "us"?
