In a birth chart, Venus is linked with love, attraction, taste and the things you value. It describes how you love, what you find beautiful and what makes you feel good in a relationship.
Venus isn't only about romance. The way you enjoy a meal, your taste in clothes, how you furnish a room and what keeps a friendship going are all tied to Venus in tradition. The common thread is why you love something or someone.
Venus never strays far from the Sun
Seen from Earth, Venus never gets more than about 47 degrees away from the Sun. That's because its orbit lies inside ours. In a chart this has a simple consequence: Venus is either in the same sign as your Sun or in one of the two signs on either side.
If your Sun is in Leo, your Venus can be in Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo or Libra, but never in Aquarius or Pisces. If you ever see a Venus sign a long way from your Sun sign, double-check the birth date.
About every 19 months Venus turns retrograde for around 40 days. Retrograde means that, seen from Earth, the planet appears to move backwards across the sky. People born during these stretches are said to have a natal Venus retrograde. Some readings take it as love and values being experienced more inwardly. It isn't a warning sign.
What does Venus traditionally represent?
Classical astrology called Venus the "lesser benefic," with Jupiter as the "greater benefic." Venus was linked with harmony, pleasure, art, friendship and coming together. It rules Taurus and Libra. In Taurus it's connected with bodily pleasures, good food and comfort; in Libra with balance, courtesy and relationships.
Modern readings add a layer of values: what you prize, what you think you deserve and what draws you in.
What does your Venus sign describe?
The sign Venus is in is read as the tone of how you show love and how you want to receive it. Grouping the signs by element makes the broad pattern easier to see:
- Fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius): love shown with enthusiasm, openly and boldly.
- Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn): love shown through effort, loyalty and practical care.
- Air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius): love shown through conversation, shared ideas and friendship.
- Water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces): love shown through emotional closeness, depth and tenderness.
There are differences within each element too. Venus in Aries likes to make the first move, Venus in Leo likes the grand gesture, Venus in Sagittarius likes exploring together.
"I've heard my Venus is in a bad sign"
Classical astrology lists signs where each planet is at ease and signs where it struggles. For Venus the difficult ones are Aries, Scorpio and Virgo. That doesn't mean people with Venus there can't love or are headed for unhappy relationships. Tradition only says Venus speaks less in "its own language" in those signs. Someone with Venus in Aries may choose directness over smoothing things over. That's a style, not a flaw.
Venus's house and aspects
The house Venus sits in is read as the area of life where love and pleasure come forward. Venus in the 5th is linked with flirting, fun and creativity, in the 7th with long-term relationships and partnership, in the 10th with harmony and a sense of style at work. Venus in the 2nd is read as a wish to spend on beautiful things.
The aspects describe how Venus works with the rest of the chart. An aspect between Venus and Mars is linked with attraction and desire, one between Venus and Saturn with caution, loyalty and love that settles over time, and one between Venus and Jupiter with generosity and optimism.
Venus and relationship compatibility
When two charts are compared, Venus is one of the first planets people look at. Aspects between one person's Venus and the other's Mars or Moon are read in tradition as a theme of attraction and closeness. The chart compatibility tool shows the aspects between two charts' planets. It deliberately doesn't produce a compatibility score, because there's no accepted way to calculate one.
Judging a relationship by two charts alone isn't fair to either person. Astrology hasn't been shown scientifically to predict who will be happy with whom. Venus's position is an exact calculation; the meanings given to it come from a symbolic tradition.
Look at your own Venus
Draw your birth chart and look at your Venus's sign, its house and, if it appears in the aspect list, the aspects it makes. Then ask yourself: when do I feel most loved, and does it resemble the description of my Venus?
