What Is the 8th House in a Birth Chart?

The 8th house in a birth chart is the house of resources shared with others, deep bonds and transformation. Tradition ties joint money, debt, inheritance, a partner's income, loss and moments of crisis to this house.

If the 2nd house describes what you earn yourself, the 8th describes what you merge with someone else. Sometimes that's a joint account, sometimes a family inheritance, sometimes a relationship where you trust someone enough to open up completely. What they share is that you're not the only one in control.

What does the 8th house traditionally describe?

Classical astrology linked the 8th house with death, inheritance, a spouse's property and debt. So it's easy to find heavy sentences about this house in old sources. There's no need to read them with fear. A chart doesn't predict death or loss; astrology hasn't been shown scientifically to do that.

There was also a technical reason tradition counted the 8th as difficult. In Whole Sign houses, the 8th sits 150 degrees from the rising sign, and classical astrology didn't count that distance as an aspect. So the 8th house doesn't "see" the ascendant. Matters a person couldn't directly control were given to this house for that reason. The 8th is also one of the succedent houses, along with the 2nd, 5th and 11th.

Modern readings describe this house in psychological terms: intimacy, trust, privacy, sexuality, the subjects nobody talks about, and starting again after a crisis. Looking at life with new eyes after a loss, or coming out of a crisis as someone different, is linked with the 8th house in tradition.

The sign on the 8th house and its ruler

In Whole Sign houses, the 8th house is the eighth sign counted from your rising sign. With Virgo rising, your 8th house is Aries. An 8th house in Aries is linked with acting quickly and directly over shared resources, and throwing yourself into a crisis without hesitating.

Aries is ruled by Mars. The house Mars sits in is read as where this theme flows. With Mars in the 2nd, that might be read as tension between your own earnings and shared resources; in the 7th, as shared-resource matters playing out mostly with a partner.

Planets in the 8th house

In a traditional reading, a planet in the 8th house brings its theme to how you handle trust, sharing and crises:

These are symbolic readings. The planet's sign and aspects change each one.

Inheritance, debt and money decisions

Because the 8th house is linked with inheritance and debt, some readings use it to predict who will inherit or fall into debt. A chart can't tell you that. If you have a decision to make about inheritance, shared property or debt, talk to a lawyer or a financial adviser.

If you're carrying grief, or your feelings have been heavy for a long time, talking to a mental-health professional will help you far more than looking at your chart.

If the 8th house is empty

With ten planets spread across twelve houses, every chart has at least two empty ones. An empty 8th house doesn't mean you won't form deep bonds, or that your life will be free of crises. The ruler of the sign on that house carries its story.

The 8th house and the 2nd house

Opposite the 8th house is the 2nd, and the two form an axis. The 2nd describes "mine," the 8th "ours." Your own salary is 2nd house; your joint account is 8th house. Which end of this axis is busier in a chart is read as whether resource matters are lived mostly alone or alongside other people.

If you don't know your birth time

The 8th house is laid out from the rising sign, so it can't be worked out without a birth time. Zodivia doesn't calculate houses for charts without a time, and uses Whole Sign by default. Planetary positions are an exact calculation; the meanings given to the houses come from a symbolic tradition.

Look at your own 8th house

Draw your birth chart and find the sign on your 8th house, any planets in it, or, if it's empty, where its ruler sits. Then ask yourself: what needs to happen for me to really trust someone?
