The 6th house in a birth chart is the house of daily work, routines and looking after your body. Tradition ties working conditions, habits, service, health routines and, in modern readings, pets to this house.
If the 10th house describes the public face of your career, the 6th describes its Monday morning: the to-do list on your desk, how you get on with colleagues, your sleep and meal routine. Big goals are set in other houses. The 6th house describes how you edge a little closer to them every day.
What does the 6th house traditionally describe?
Ancient Greek astrology called the 6th house "Bad Fortune" and saw it as the house where Mars rejoiced. Illness, toil, serving others and servants belonged to it. Classical sources count it among the difficult houses.
There was a reason for that. In Whole Sign houses, the 6th sits 150 degrees from the rising sign. Classical astrology didn't count that distance as an aspect, so the 6th house doesn't "see" the ascendant. The same was true of the 2nd, 8th and 12th houses. Houses that couldn't connect with the person were read as matters outside that person's control.
Modern readings describe this house in much calmer terms. Today the 6th is read mostly as daily routine, effort and looking after yourself. It's also one of the cadent houses, along with the 3rd, 9th and 12th.
The sign on the 6th house and its ruler
In Whole Sign houses, the 6th house is the sixth sign counted from your rising sign. With Aquarius rising, your 6th house is Cancer. A 6th house in Cancer is linked with being strongly affected by the emotional atmosphere at work, and with being the one who looks after people at work.
Cancer is ruled by the Moon. The house the Moon sits in is read as the area of life your daily routine connects to. With the Moon in the 4th, that might mean working from home or housework sitting at the centre of the day; in the 10th, work as a source of emotional security.
Planets in the 6th house
In a traditional reading, a planet in the 6th house brings its theme to the way you work and your daily habits:
- Mercury in the 6th: detailed, orderly work, lists and plans.
- Venus in the 6th: a search for harmony at work, caring about a pleasant working environment.
- Mars in the 6th: working hard, throwing yourself into work, putting off rest.
- Jupiter in the 6th: enjoying your work, being helpful and generous with colleagues.
- Saturn in the 6th: disciplined routines, responsibility, sometimes an overly rigid order.
These are symbolic readings. If Mars is in the 6th but trine Venus, that intense working pace can be read as energy joined to work you love.
The 6th house and health
Because classical astrology linked the 6th house with illness, some sources draw health readings from it. A chart isn't a medical document and doesn't predict illness. The 6th house can be a starting point for thinking about how sleep, food and stress show up in your body. If you have a health problem, talk to a doctor.
If the 6th house is empty
With ten planets spread across twelve houses, every chart has at least two empty ones. An empty 6th house doesn't mean you're disorganised or don't work. The ruler of the sign on that house carries its story.
The 6th house and the 12th house
Opposite the 6th house is the 12th: retreat, solitude and what stays out of sight. Together they form an axis. The 6th describes visible effort and daily routine; the 12th describes rest, letting go and the inner world. The balance between working and resting is read along this axis.
If you don't know your birth time
The 6th house is laid out from the rising sign, so it can't be worked out without a birth time. Zodivia doesn't calculate houses for charts without a time, and uses Whole Sign by default. Planetary positions are an exact calculation; the meanings given to the houses come from a symbolic tradition. Astrology hasn't been shown scientifically to predict personality.
Look at your own 6th house
Draw your birth chart and find the sign on your 6th house, any planets in it, or, if it's empty, where its ruler sits. Then ask yourself: which small habit in my daily routine shapes how my whole day goes?
