What Is the 5th House in a Birth Chart?

The 5th house in a birth chart is the house of pleasure, creativity and romance. Tradition ties play, hobbies, art, flirting, fun and children to this house.

It's the side of life you don't strictly need but that makes life worth living. Work, money and responsibility sit in other houses. The 5th house describes the moments when you set all that aside and do something just for the joy of it: a painting, a song, a match, a first date.

What does the 5th house traditionally describe?

Ancient Greek astrology called the 5th house "Good Fortune" and saw it as the house where Venus rejoiced. It was linked with celebration, pleasure, gifts and good news. Classical sources describe it as one of the most favourable houses in the chart. The 11th house opposite was called the "Good Spirit."

The 5th is one of the succedent houses, along with the 2nd, 8th and 11th. Tradition sees succedent houses as the place where what started in an angular house is kept going and grows. If the 4th house is the family, the 5th describes its continuation: children. Modern readings widen this to putting something of yourself into the world, which makes creativity part of this house too.

When it comes to love, there's a distinction between the 5th and 7th houses. The 5th describes flirting, romance, excitement and fun; the 7th describes commitment and partnership. Fancying someone belongs to the 5th house; building a life with them belongs to the 7th.

The sign on the 5th house and its ruler

In Whole Sign houses, the 5th house is the fifth sign counted from your rising sign. With Aries rising, your 5th house is Leo. A 5th house in Leo is linked with enjoying things openly and with enthusiasm, and liking to step on stage, show something creative and be appreciated for it.

Leo is ruled by the Sun. The house the Sun sits in is read as where this theme of pleasure flows. With the Sun in the 10th, creativity might turn into a career; in the 7th, pleasure is shared most with a partner.

Planets in the 5th house

In a traditional reading, a planet in the 5th house brings its theme to what you enjoy and how you love:

Nobody lives a joyless life because Saturn is in their 5th house. Tradition reads it as someone who somehow wants to "earn" their fun. Someone like that might master a hobby years down the line.

On children and games of chance

Tradition links the 5th house with children. A chart doesn't predict whether you'll have children, how many, or anything about pregnancy. For those questions, the right place to go is a doctor.

Modern sources also link the 5th house with risk-taking and gambling. Placing a bet or making a risky investment because Jupiter is in your 5th house isn't a good idea. Astrology hasn't been shown scientifically to predict outcomes like these.

If the 5th house is empty

With ten planets spread across twelve houses, every chart has at least two empty ones. An empty 5th house doesn't mean there's no pleasure or romance in your life. The ruler of the sign on that house carries its story.

The 5th house and the 11th house

Opposite the 5th house is the 11th: friends, groups and communities. Together they form an axis. The 5th describes personal pleasure and self-expression; the 11th describes goals shared with others. Singing solo on stage is 5th house; singing in a choir is 11th house.

If you don't know your birth time

The 5th house is laid out from the rising sign, so it can't be worked out without a birth time. Zodivia doesn't calculate houses for charts without a time, and uses Whole Sign by default. Planetary positions are an exact calculation; the meanings given to the houses come from a symbolic tradition.

Look at your own 5th house

Draw your birth chart and find the sign on your 5th house, any planets in it, or, if it's empty, where its ruler sits. Then ask yourself: when did I last do something with no purpose at all, purely for the fun of it?
