The 4th house in a birth chart is the house of home, family and roots. Tradition ties where you come from, the setting you grew up in, the home you live in and your private life behind closed doors to this house.
It's the lowest point of the chart. If the 10th house describes the side of your life everyone can see, the 4th describes the side nobody sees: who you are at home, where you feel safe, which habits you carry from your family.
What does the 4th house traditionally describe?
In ancient Greek astrology the point where the 4th house begins was called the hypogeion, meaning "underground." It's the sky that was beneath your feet when you were born. Today that point is called the IC, from the Latin Imum Coeli, "bottom of the sky." It appears as "IC" in Zodivia's positions table.
The 4th is one of the four angular houses, along with the 1st, 7th and 10th. Classical sources give this house home and land, property handed down through the family, one of the parents, and "the end of matters," the later part of life. Tradition is split on which parent belongs here. Most classical sources give the father to the 4th and the mother to the 10th; some modern writers argue the reverse.
Modern readings treat the house more psychologically: emotional foundations, a sense of belonging, whatever makes you feel "I'm home." Turning a hotel room into your own with a few books, or putting the same object in its place first thing after every move, is linked with this house in tradition.
Is the IC always at the start of the 4th house?
That depends on the house system. In systems like Placidus or Koch, the 4th house starts at exactly the IC's degree. In Whole Sign houses, the 4th house is the fourth sign counted from your rising sign, and the IC may not be inside it. It usually falls in the 3rd, 4th or 5th house. Zodivia uses Whole Sign by default, so an IC showing up in another house isn't a mistake.
The sign on the 4th house and its ruler
In Whole Sign houses, with Libra rising your 4th house is Capricorn. A 4th house in Capricorn is linked with an orderly home with clear rules, taking on responsibility early in the family, or a family where love is shown through effort rather than words.
Capricorn is ruled by Saturn. Where Saturn sits in the chart is read as where the theme of home and family flows. If Saturn is in the 10th house, that can be read as a sense of responsibility from the family being carried into a career.
Planets in the 4th house
In a traditional reading, a planet in the 4th house brings its theme to your home life and your relationship with your roots:
- Moon in the 4th: a strong emotional bond with home and family, a wish to build a nest.
- Venus in the 4th: a wish to make home beautiful, a search for harmony in the family.
- Mars in the 4th: a lively or tense home environment, spending energy at home.
- Saturn in the 4th: growing up early within the family, home as a place of responsibility.
- Uranus in the 4th: frequent moves, an unusual family set-up, breaking from your roots early.
Each of these shifts with the planet's sign and aspects. The same placement might be read in one chart as a restless childhood and in another as a busy, lively home.
A chart doesn't judge your family
Because the 4th house is linked with childhood and parents, some readings make firm statements about family from it. A chart can't tell you how your childhood went or what your family is like. Two siblings with the same placement can describe very different childhoods. If you're carrying something heavy about your family, the best place to talk it through is a therapist's room.
If the 4th house is empty
With ten planets spread across twelve houses, every chart has at least two empty ones. An empty 4th house doesn't mean family or home matter little in your life. The ruler of the sign on that house carries its story.
The 4th house and the 10th house
Directly opposite the 4th house is the 10th: career and your place in public life. Together they form an axis. Think of a tree's roots and its branches. The question of balancing work and home is read along this axis.
If you don't know your birth time
The 4th house and the IC depend on your birth time. Zodivia doesn't calculate the houses or the IC for charts without a time. Planetary positions are an exact calculation; the meanings given to the houses come from a symbolic tradition. Astrology hasn't been shown scientifically to predict personality or anyone's past.
Look at your own 4th house
Draw your birth chart and look at the sign on your 4th house, any planets in it, and where the IC sits in the positions table. Then ask yourself: what makes a place feel like home to me, and is it there in the place I live now?
