What Is the 3rd House in a Birth Chart?

The 3rd house in a birth chart is the house of communication, learning and your immediate surroundings. Tradition ties siblings, neighbours, everyday conversation, short trips and your early school years to this house.

This house describes the area where you touch the world most often: the people you message every day, the things you read, the streets you pass on your way to work. Big decisions are made in other houses. The 3rd house is where the everyday conversations and small bits of learning that lead to those decisions happen.

What does the 3rd house traditionally describe?

Ancient Greek astrology called the 3rd house the "Goddess." It was the house where the Moon rejoiced, the place it felt most at home. The 9th house opposite, where the Sun rejoiced, was called the "God." That pairing is still used today: the 3rd house describes knowledge close at hand, the 9th knowledge far away.

The 3rd is one of the cadent houses, along with the 6th, 9th and 12th. Tradition sees cadent houses as the place where what started in the angular houses and built up in the succedent houses gets spread around and exchanged. In the 3rd house, that exchange is called communication: information comes in, gets processed and is passed on.

Siblings belong to this house too. Tradition links brothers and sisters, cousins and close relatives of your own generation to the 3rd house. For someone without siblings, it can describe childhood friends or the neighbourhood.

The sign on the 3rd house and its ruler

In Whole Sign houses, the 3rd house is the third sign counted from your rising sign. With Leo rising, your 3rd house is Libra. A 3rd house in Libra is read as a gentle, balanced way of communicating, a habit of listening and weighing both sides.

You also look at the ruler of that sign. Libra is ruled by Venus. If Venus is in your 10th house, that's read as a gift for communication flowing into your career. If it's in the 7th, your most important conversations happen in one-to-one relationships.

Planets in the 3rd house

In a traditional reading, a planet in the 3rd house brings its theme to the way you think and talk:

These are starting points. The planet's sign and aspects change the reading. If Saturn is in the 3rd but trine Mercury, an orderly, deep-thinking mind can be read behind that careful way with words.

My 3rd house is empty. What does that mean?

With ten planets spread across twelve houses, every chart has at least two empty ones. An empty 3rd house doesn't mean communication plays no part in your life. You look at the sign on the house and where that sign's ruler sits instead. That planet carries the story.

The 3rd house and the 9th house

Opposite the 3rd house is the 9th, and the two form an axis. The 3rd describes everyday information, the people nearby and short trips; the 9th describes big ideas, beliefs and faraway places. Reading the news is 3rd house; thinking about what it means is 9th house. Which end of this axis is busier in a chart is read as whether a person leans toward the details or the big picture.

If you don't know your birth time

Houses are laid out from the rising sign, so the 3rd house can't be worked out without a birth time. Zodivia doesn't calculate houses for charts without a time. You'll still see the planets' signs, but not the houses they fall in. If another site shows a different house, it's most likely using a different house system. Zodivia uses Whole Sign by default.

Planetary positions are an exact calculation. The meanings given to the houses come from a symbolic tradition; astrology hasn't been shown scientifically to predict personality.

Look at your own 3rd house

Draw your birth chart and find the sign on your 3rd house, any planets in it, or, if it's empty, where its ruler sits. Then ask yourself: how do I learn something new most easily, by reading, by listening, or by explaining it to someone?
