What are the lunar phases?
The Moon makes no light of its own; it reflects what it receives from the Sun. As it travels around Earth, how much of its lit face we can see keeps changing. When Moon and Sun line up in the same direction, the lit face turns away from us and the Moon disappears: the new moon. When it swings to the opposite side, we see that face in full: the full moon. The two stops in between, where we see exactly half, are the quarters. The whole cycle takes about 29.5 days.
What does it mean in astrology?
Astrological tradition ties the new moon to beginnings and the full moon to ripening and coming into view. The sign a phase falls in matters to the reading too: each full moon foregrounds a different sign's concerns. Those are interpretations, not measurements — the dates and times on this page are the measurements.
Where is the Moon in your own chart?
The sign the Moon stood in when you were born is the placement that describes your emotional habits. Cast your birth chart to see which sign and house your Moon falls in.
Times are computed with Swiss Ephemeris, which finds the moments when the angle between Moon and Sun is exactly 0°, 90°, 180° and 270°. Nobody types them in, so they never go stale. Times are given in UTC.
